A couple of tips on caring for your new valve amp!
We hope you're enjoying your new valve amp! To help you get the longest possible life out of your new gear, we wanted to share a couple of pieces of advice on caring for your new amplifier:
1. Never move your amp until it has cooled down
- Hot vacuum tubes are extremely fragile and prone to physical damage.
- When using your amp, the filaments (metal wires) inside the valves become incredibly fragile.
- If the amp is bumped or jolted before it has a chance to cool down, those fragile valves can easily break.
Once you switch your amp off after a heavy jam session, let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes before you move it. This gives the filaments time to cool down and harden back up, keeping your valves safe and saving you the cost and headache of replacing them.
2. Never run your amp without a speaker connected
If your new amplifier is a combo, the built-in speaker is already connected for you. However, if your new amp is a head, or a combo which includes an external speaker output, you must use caution when connecting a speaker cabinet.
- Valve amps require a "load" (the speaker) to absorb the power they generate.
- If you turn the amp on while plugged into the speaker output without a speaker plugged in, that electrical energy has nowhere to go.
- The energy will bounce back into the circuit and can permanently damage your output transformer.
Always double-check that the internal speaker on your combo amp is firmly plugged in. If you are using an amp head, or a combo equipped with an external speaker output, ensure an impedance matched extension cabinet is fully connected via a dedicated speaker cable before flipping the power switch.
