Artist GG1 Handbuilt Solid Wood Acoustic Electric Guitar w/ Fishman Pickup & Hard Case

From the sleepy hollow of Gulgong in the NSW Central Tablelands, the shuffling sound of sawdust on floors amidst an air of silent study... this, the birthplace of some of the finest instruments ever produced in Australia. Those lucky enough to have owned a guitar made by Gerard Gilet, or to have studied under his tutelage, know that unwavering attention to detail and old-world craftsmanship are absolute non-negotiables once you cross the threshold of his workshop.

The Artist GG1, designed by Gerard Gilet in association with Artist Guitars and hand-built in China, brings Gerard's unmatched tonal design sensibilities to a wider audience. Handbuilt in a small Chinese workshop manned by a team of 5 expert luthiers, this is not your usual Chinese-made mass-production guitar. We evaluated an (admittedly absurd) amount of production options and were eventually swayed by this workshop's prior work exclusively producing ultra-high-end acoustic guitars. The small scale of production and close-knit team of luthiers allow for consistent communication and real-time feedback, ensuring each GG1 is built exactly to perfection.

Just above the bone nut, Gotoh® SGS510 tuners adorn the mahogany headstock. The Gotoh® name is synonymous with quality, much like the designer and namesake of this instrument. With a gear ratio of 1:15, there will be no endless twisting of the machine head to bring your guitar to pitch, an issue common in higher ratioed, inexpensive tuning machines. These tuners are incredibly smooth and ultra-durable, allowing the GG1 to remain pitch-perfect even under heavy strumming, and the strenuous conditions live use can present.

Pickup selection for the GG1 was a process that spanned a myriad of options and hour after hour of testing. The Fishman OEM INK-501 was selected for its unmatched tone-shaping capabilities and low-profile aesthetic. Having crafted industry-leading acoustic guitar pickups since their inception in Massachusetts over 40 years ago, Fishman has led the way in combining intricate technologies with elegant design, ensuring the presence of their onboard pickups does not detract in any sense from the natural acoustic tone of the instrument, but rather guaranteeing this tone can be replicated faithfully when amplified - a key concern in the production of the Artist GG1.

With a Solid AAA Engleman Spruce Top, and Solid AAA American Black Walnut back and sides, the GG1 resonates magnificently. 90° Quartersawn Alaskan Sitka Spruce bracing and a laminate tail block for increased strength are just some of the specifications Gerard Gilet devotees will recognise. A one-piece mahogany neck ensures heightened durability in varying climates, made all the more striking paired with the deep chocolate grain of the high-end African Ebony slab fretboard.

At the heart of the GG1, the soundhole is surrounded by a ring of twinkling Abalone and Cocobolo purfling - the latter also binding either side of the American Black Walnut body. An exceedingly rare wood, Cocobolo is rarely found outside of national parks and reserves, with an infinitesimally minuscule amount available for the commercial market each year. No expense has been spared to ensure this instrument presents equally as superbly as it feels and sounds

Turning our attention to the tail end of the GG1, a waxed American Black Walnut Bridge is beautifully complemented by Ivoroid bridge pins, inlaid with pearlescent Abalone. Through an extensive and rigorous testing process completed over Gerard’s decades of experience, a tusq saddle was selected as the most tonally rich option for this guitar. Producing sweeter harmonics in the mid-treble frequencies when compared to bone and ivory saddles, in addition to drastically heightened sustain; every point of contact between string and guitar has been tested and re-tested by Gerard, as well as the Artist Guitars team to ensure unobstructed resonance and a uniquely rich tonal profile.

From inception to prototype to production, every single feature on the Artist GG1 has been painstakingly designed by Gerard Gilet, according to the master luthier’s every aesthetic and construction principle. Forget what you know about signature guitar models… this is a guitar completely designed by its namesake.

We could truly spend another 1000 words waxing lyrical about every minute detail that makes the GG1 incredible but at the end of the day, words can only go so far. So we'll leave you with just a couple more.

"The Artist GG1 is the best acoustic guitar we have ever produced" - Ian Bush (Artist Guitars CEO & Founder)

This instrument is stocked in Australia. If it is ordered on our New Zealand, United Kingdom, or United States website, it will be made to order. The build-time is 8-12 weeks. If you order a GG1 and want an accurate ETA, please contact us via email with your order number.

    An Excellent Guitar

I have played this guitar at 5 gigs now and each time a guitarist in the audience came up to me after the set to ask about the guitar and comment positively on the sound. It’s extremely playable especially after I lowered the action to suit my preference. The pickup is terrific and I really like the D’Addario strings it comes with though I usually play Elixirs. Great wood, beautifully built, excellent price, terrific neck. Couldn’t recommend it more. Also the case is one of the best I have.

    Incredibly Great Guitar

I ordered a GG1EQ in the evening on Monday 1 December and the courier delivered to my central Coast Home this morning! Took the box into our home studio area, opened it and there was a beautiful fibreglass case. Opened it up to reveal the fabulous looking GG1EQ. Tapped the spruce top and it gave a wonderfully full and resonant note. Then out of the case and a quick tune up. It was sort of close already but need a little wind on the tuning pegs to get the pitch right. Straight off, I noticed that the pegs were silky smooth and easily adjusted. Then a little finger picking and strumming - WOW WOW WOW. The tones, clarity and ease of use were mind blowing. My Matons will be left out for any friends who arrive without their guitars or set with alternative tuning for a quick change of pace occasionally. This is the third Artist Guitar I have bought (a Suburst Electric and Resonator) and each has been incredibly good both for playability and value for money. Well done and thank you Artists Guitars.

    Wow

I’m 66. I haven’t bought a new guitar since 1984. Yamaha CW And on a whim chose this guitar GG1IQ. Great experience just opening the case with the smell of new guitar and the burgundy coloured liner. Still getting used to it. Totally different feel to the Yamaha. And then I plugged it into a small amp and WOW. Great sound, very responsive, play it as quiet or loud as you want. I am no guitar aficionado but for me this is a fantastic piece of workmanship and design. Very happy.

    Simply supeb

I wanted to buy this guitar way back earlier in the year, but it wasn’t even available for pre-order, and the few that were arriving at A.G. were already committed to other lucky buyers. So, I just had to be patient and wait! In the meantime, because I still needed a good guitar, I ordered an Artist Delta3EQ, and that gave me an insight into the beautiful quality of handbuilt instruments being turned out by A.G.’s specialist team in China. The four-month wait finally went by, and I now have my GG1EQ. (During that time, A.G. sent me weekly updates confirming that everything was on schedule — a nice touch when you’re waiting that long!) ………. What can I say? In my time (I’m pretty ancient! :-), I’ve owned many a high-end brand-name guitar, both electric and acoustic (Fender/Gibson/Ovation/etc.), some of them costing way more than this, but the GG1EQ is in a league of its own; I believe I’d need to spend many hundreds, even thousands more to get an instrument as good. Beautiful woods, precise set-up, exact intonation, classy hard case, I could go on. The full blurb is on the website, so I don’t need to repeat it here — suffice to say that the blurb is all true. The silver/grey fibreglass case in itself is a work of art, and unlike the numerous other cases I own — striking looks, plush interior, and good neck support. (It even comes with a couple of straps you can attach to sling it on your back, if that’s your thing.) There’s the usual accessories — truss rod tool, key for the case, manual for the Fishman INK-501, picks, etc., although no guitar lead is included. ….. For performance, the main pedals I’m using are simply an LR Baggs Align Session --> Boss EQ-200 --> LR Baggs Align Reverb --> LR Baggs Align Active D.I. --> FOH, and the sound is just superb. I play in a church worship band, where I’m primarily a bassist (seven basses, but who’s counting (apart from my wife :-)?), but I get to play acoustic guitar a couple of times a month, and I now look forward even more to those Sundays. ….. Artist Guitars have always punched above their weight in value, quality, and service, but this guitar is a whole ’nother level. Okay, the price of the GG1EQ is not chicken feed, but I for one consider it excellent value. If you’re a serious guitarist, I’d say pawn the family silver, sell the kids, just go for it — I doubt you’ll regret it. ….. If I could award 6 stars instead of 5, I would do so. VERY WELL DONE, A.G.!

    Artist GG1EQ

I've had this guitar for over a month now and I think I must have played it every day. The sound was exactly what I was hoping for, thanks to the amazingly beautiful spruce top and blackwood sides. The neck width is ideal for finger picking, which has been my main style but the crisp resonant tones when using a pick has drawn me into flat picking which sounds superb. I would not hesitate to recommend this as very good value for money. The finish is faultless although the neck is relatively flatter than what I would have preferred. To my ears the pickup gives an accurate response across all the frequencies although the EQ provides only subtle modelling to the sounds. And I should add the sturdy case is spectacular looking too.

    Gerard Gilet Designed! No brainer

When I saw Artist had teamed up with Gerard buying this guitar was a no brainer for me. I bought it straight away. It is a great guitar, plays even better than I thought it would.

    The best acoustic I’ve owned

I sat watching this guitar since its release, mesmerised at its premium specs, no unnecessary fretboard etc artwork and price. I was also just waiting for reviews. I’ve only played acoustic for the last 30 years and since 2007 a Tanglewood TW1000 H SRCE - which was the best I could find for the $ and is amazing (despite the fretboard inlays and decorative bindings which is not important to me). It’s been through everything. I’ve abused it busking, dropped it, pawned it at times and clean cracked one side with a ceiling fan. Always repaired and sounding better as it’s aged. However, I’ve had my eyes open the last couple of years to buy another guitar - even considering saving a ridiculous amount of money for a Gibson J-45 for the best warm tones different from the bright, loud, punchy Tanglewood. Hence, I ended up purchasing the GG1EQ after a few reviews on its premium quality and how no-frills it looked to me. As soon as it arrived and I handled it, you could tell straight away it was perfect. I did know the neck was going to be a bit fatter than I’m used to and of course feel differently because I literally have not played any other guitar for decades. I’ve had it now for a few months and it’s completely fallen into its place as my main guitar. I naturally play aggressively and because of how solid it is and at a great price point, I don’t feel finicky as I would’ve on a $5000 Gibson J-45. That’s also why I wouldn’t even stop and think about a Cedar top guitar as there’d be holes in it in no time looking like Willie Nelson’s and Glen Hansard’s guitars. So the AAA Engelmann Spruce top was paramount. There’s no better feeling than making a near perfect decision on a new acoustic guitar.

    Great guitar, however....

I have read so much about Gerard Gilet and his amazing guitar building, I also managed to play one of his guitars in South Melbourne. That said, when Artist said they were releasing an acoustic guitar designed by him, I had to check it out. Well, I'm very glad I did because the guitar is wonderful. Nice bottom end, great mids and sparkly highs and it is so easy to play (after being set up). Just a very happy camper. My only criticism is that the grain in the spruce top is not as pronounced as in the photographs on the website. There is also a darkened join of the spruce top which effects the aesthetics BUT the guitar sounds GREAT. Thanks you Artist guitars

    Excellent Guitar and Case

I am very happy to have purchased the GG1EQ Hand built Solid wood Acoustic/Electric Guitar and Hard Case. It is a beautiful Instrument . It looks great and feels comfortable. It sounds amazing with a clear and brilliant tone. I am enjoying very much playing this guitar that I don't want to put it down. It has become my favorite instrument. Great value for it's price compared with other well known brands. I highly recommend buying this hand built guitar.

    Great Guitar

I pre-ordered this guitar as I already have an OMC200 and OMC500. This guitar sits on par with guitars at a much higher price point. It might be my bias, however I would prefer this by far to Cole Clarke Angel, mainly due to the flexibility that the pickup gives. When this arrived I had it professionally set up to my taste and the tech remarked how well it was setup from the factory (eg intonation, action, neck tension). Thoroughly recommend this guitar.

    Breathtakingly Beautiful

Breathtakingly Beautiful Based on who designed the GG1EQ and the materials it is made from, I had no hesitation ordering Artist Guitars most expensive instrument. The GG1EQ is breathtakingly beautiful. Even though it is an OM sized guitar, it has the richer and more substantial sound of a Grand Auditorium sized instrument. This is my first acoustic guitar with an Engleman Spruce top and Black Walnut back and sides, so I can’t give you a sense of how it sounds in relation to instruments made from the same materials. To my ears (from my experience), it has the warmth of a mahogany body, the full bass of a rosewood body, the bell like highs of a rosewood body, and the balance of a maple body. All in all, the best of everything. The fit and finish is worthy of a $6,000 acoustic guitar. I alternate between two Eastman OMs and a Pratley OM, and the GG1EQ is getting more than its share of playing time. As a fingerstyle player with a light touch, the setup on the GG1EQ was not for me, but this was quickly and easily resolved by the boys at Fretco. Ian: can we please have a GG2EQ? I love having such a lovely guitar to play. And by the way, the silver fibreglass case is cool.
