Artist BM1 Six String Electric Bass Guitar

For the adventurous among you... a bass guitar unlike anything you've ever played! Featuring the same mid-60s offset body shape as our GM1 series guitars, the BM1 combines the ease of guitar playing with the low end of traditional bass guitars - vintage styling, premium specs, and six strings to bring your wildest bass lines to fruition.

The BM1 is set up to be tuned an octave lower than a traditional guitar. As opposed to a more 'regular' 34" scale length, the GM1 features a short, 30" scale, with an ergonomic, narrow (42mm at the nut) maple neck which will feel extremely familiar to guitarists making the switch to the rhythm section. Fresh from the box with string gauges of 84, 72, 56, 44, 34, 24 (from low to high), you won't find the "thickness" expected of traditional bass guitars; rather, melodic players a la Robert Smith and Peter Hook will appreciate the increased "cut-through" of the BM1's increased treble response and extended range.

Under the hood, three single coils provide brilliant sparkle alongside a rich low-end response. With individual on-off switches for each pickup, the BM1 also features a kill switch, in case you tend toward sounds more brutal than beachy! The vintage-style tremolo system provides ample opportunity to get even weirder - think shoegazing overdubs, surf-y, warbling solos, or ambient soundscapes!

A great bass guitar for guitarists

By: on 26 June 2026
I do love a quirky guitar (another strat-o-like?...yawn) and this is a great option for a guitarist wanting to have a crack at a bass without having to grow extra long arms! I was waiting for it to come back into stock and it was def worth the wait. The look, quality and tone is excellent, the trem system stays in tune much better than I expected. Incredible value, quick delivery...yet another winner from Artist. Highly recommended.

Fun to play

I've really enjoyed playing this bass. I'm generally not a bass player, but like to have one for recordings but this fun to play. The finish and neck and set up is a great, and easy to play from the box. Haven't needed to do any adjustments.

So glad you’re having fun with it! Awesome that the finish, neck, and setup made it easy to play straight out of the box. No tweaks needed.

Almost perfect

[TLDR: Plays great, looks great, fantastic value, but the circuit design needs improvement.] Fit and finish exceeds the price of entry. The neck is outstanding and could be sold for the price of the whole guitar with a different logo. The quality of the hardware was surprisingly good, and you won't need to run out immediately to replace the bridge, vibrato, or tuners. The pickups are AlNiCo and sound good. The lost star goes to the circuit design. The switching setup is upside down with down = on and the kill switch furthest from the bridge. I also consider the kill switch a bit of a cop out as well... it would not have been hard to include the strangle switch or even a parallel/series switch (This is what I've immediately done). The potentiometers are also 250 K instead of the 1 M that this style of bass should have. I understand 1 Ms might be hard to source in the factory this was built in... but it could have at least been 500 Ks.

Prretttty, prretttty, prrettty good!

Firstly it's great out of the box. Of course it's not going to stay that way because I'm going to mod the bejeezus out of it. Things that are great. The finish is perfect. Sounds great, pick ups are alnico if you're interested. Neck is on straight and all strings align. Very light. Things that I'm changing. Strings need to be 95s or over, changing to Stringjoy. I'm going to change the tail piece to hard. Whammy is fun, but don't expect it to stay in tune. Intonation needs work. Headstock isn't my cup of tea. Overall great guitar and better than the Classic Vibe out of the box.
