DANIEL PORTELLI  All Age Music

Electric/Classical Guitar, Song Writing, Composition, Arranging and Theory, Guitar Ensemble Musical Director

Daniel Portelli is a music composer-scholar with diverse interests across visual arts, dance and film with a focus on an East-Asian and European art music confluence. His recent composition for chamber orchestra, Allegory of Nature (2010) was presented at the Aspen Composer’s Conference in Colorado, USA, along with a research paper documenting his process. The piece is an exploration of self-identity in sound using the symbolic notion of 'water' as a way to negotiate musical ideas and deal with more abstract concepts of process. This piece earned him a commission for a new work with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra with mentoring from senior Australian composer Nigel Butterley. The work was also awarded an APRA music composition prize in 2011.

Daniel is collaborating with filmmaker Donna Maree Chang on dao inspired audio-visual works, to add to a growing collection, including Satori (2009) and Twin Phobias (2009) which both premiered at Creative Explosion, Sydney (2009) and were also exhibited at Carriageworks, Sydney (2009). Their recent three-screen film collaboration water. wave. form. (2010) premiered at CAPOW (Composers and Performers out West), Sydney (2011). He has also performed his electro-acoustic work Yi at the 2009 Australasian Computer Music Conference in Brisbane. Daniel’s recent work for chamber ensemble entitled Antibiosis (2011) was recorded in October 2011 and performed by Sydney ensemble Chronology Arts.

Daniel is currently completing a Master of Arts (Honours) at the University of Western Sydney where he also teaches music composition part-time. In the next few years, Daniel plans to complete a doctorate (DCA).

The guitar is Daniel’s native instrument. He has studied classical guitar for 8 years at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre with Barton Staggs, and performed in experimental rock bands. He aims to inspire people and get them excited about learning and performing music.
