How are these only $249?

By: on 11 March 2024
Artist Guitars - I can't believe your pricing... this one plays well above the tiny price tag. I ordered 2 of these for students to play at the high school I work at. When I opened the box, I was unsure of what to expect - it looks stunning / classic, it has a good weight to it (to go with the low frequencies haha), and most of all I was surprised at how well it was setup! Zero buzz issues, good action. I played this for about 45 minutes instead of doing the school work I probably should have been doing! It accepted my best guitar player attempts at Muse chordal riffs, Chili Peppers slapping and Blink 182 thumping. I particularly liked the control setup, I thought the versatility will make them really useful for a variety of styles that our students play. I liked these so much that one will be kept for the recording studio (in the staffroom, probably). Don't waste your time, look no further for a great bass at a silly low price.

Great Bass and fast service

I ordered this bass as my first Foray into the Bass world as I normally play guitar (badly). Ordered Sunday night and arrived at my home in Melbourne Wednesday morning. Playable right out of the box and with no issues. Its a really nice guitar, now I just need to learn to play it properly.

Vintage Hybrid Monster Bass

This bass is my second bass in the band GANGS OF OLD LADIES, I used an Artist J bass on our last EP and wanted the active hybrid for our next track and it is such an amazing guitar for the money - seriously don't bother wasting $500+ - when you can get amazing tone and quality from the Artist range

Worthwhile Investment

This was the second instrument I purchased for myself from Artist Guitars. Originally I ordered the sparkle finish blue version of this bass but had to return it due to problems with the finish. Artist was great to deal with. They offered an exchange and I choose the Pearl White model. Organising return was trouble free. Only delay was the courier which was outside our control. The instrument that eventually arrived was well set up. Played great straight out of the box. Nice neck. Good fret work. Active pickups and EQ gives players variety in tones. Can play instrument passively for old school sounds. I used to have a Japanese 90s era Squier P Bass. I feel this bass in terms of quality, finish, playability is much better. It is alot of fun to play and once you start playing it you don't want to put it down. I'd recommend this bass for someone looking for a P/J style bass and tonal variety.

Ridiculous Value

By: on 30 July 2022
I've been playing guitar for years and decided to learn bass to add another feather to my musical cap. Reviews for this bass were good so I thought why not support an Aussie company and try a cheap bass. I'm not an expert on basses but I cannot fault this guitar. It has better fretwork than some of my mid range (~$1000) guitars. It's a good weight being not too heavy and sounds fantastic. The white finish looks neat as, too. Pretty bloody happy with this bass, especially for the price. You could probably rate it a 3 or 4 star bass, but for this price point and with free delivery you couldn't really get any better. Will be buying from artist for years to come, I imagine.

Vintage Hybrid PJ Bass

By: on 17 June 2022
Man, this Bass is awesome, right out of the box. It is one of the best basses I've ever played. Perfectly set up , I'm gonna put on some heavier strings tho. The one small issue is a slight buzz in the electrics when the treble is turned up, almost like a single coil buzz.

Excellent Bass Guitar and even better Customer Ser

By: on 18 March 2022
I have been on the Artist database for a few years and finally decided to take the leap and purchase an Artist Vintage Hybrid P-J styled Bass. WOW! I'm impressed. Whilst I'm not a pro, this Bass is exactly what I've been looking for and is exceptionally good value for money. The tones are crisp and clean, it plays extremely well and the unit is a lot lighter than most Bass Guitars which is better for my ageing back! On top of all this, the customer service was impeccable and the delivery was fast. Keep up the great work team. I will definitely order again at some stage.

A solid good bass at incredible value

By: on 3 March 2022
Not only incredible value at only $249 but a damn good bass. Good looking, great sounding, well balanced and comfortable to play. Just love it already after only one day which I received in Vic country in just 3 working days. It safely arrived in pristine condition and is perfectly set up (thanks Hank in QC). This is my first P & or J style bass I’ve owned which will certainly more than compliment my better known brand and style basses. My good mate suggested trying an Artist after being extremely happy with his Artist Tele guitar so thought at $249 it was worth a punt. Just super impressed with whole transaction. Thanks so much Artist Guitars!

Fantastic

By: on 31 October 2021
The bass and case came in 2 days. I’ve been inspired to start playing bass again after many years (I know). Picked up my old Squier which was lent to my son’s band’s bassist only to find the neck so warped, I couldn’t even play it. So I purchased this bass ( and a Fender Rumble 40 which is really good too) because of the price and great reviews. I’ve had a few basses new and second hand over the years and found this to be an excellent playing bass straight out of the box. And the finish and tone is really nice too. I’d rate it equal to other much more expensive Ibanez, Squier and Washburn that I’ve had brand new. The active feature brings the sound up front a bit more without sacrificing the tone. It literally sounds like it looks, Precision or Jazz. Warmth and growl. Action is sweet and the strings sound great. My bar was set pretty low because I’m not a great bassist and didn’t want to spend a ton. But overall I’m really impressed with this instrument and look forward to practicing and getting my chops up. Thanks Artist for a great product and service.

Very Impressed

Thanks Artist Guitars, This is my second purchase very impressed with the quality and the price. This is my first Bass Guitar, Your products were recommended by a person who's opinion I trust, my cousin a professional musician and fanatical guitar collector. He said, "This company has good quality instruments and affordable, hell If it doesn't work out I buy them off you, the build quality is great and the price you can't go wrong. " I was very impressed from the first impression out of the box, they look great and the action is well set up very playable . Excellent service fast delivery no hassles. I'm enjoying my guitar and bass journey so far. I'm looking forward to my next purchase in future Thanks for the follow up email.

Solid quality P-J bass at this price point

By: on 10 March 2021
This is the second bass I've purchased from AG, and the 4th instrument. As usual, the turnaround on order to shipment and delivery went without a hitch. Regarding the Vintage Hybrid P-J itself, this is an inexpensive but quality instrument for beginner-intermediate musicians playing the bass. At around half the price of the entry-level name-brand models, you won't get a better deal on a budget. Tone is the main thing I was concerned about when purchasing the P-J, wanting that warmer low-end that a typical P-bass would offer with decent mid-range. The P-J has both split-coil 'Precision' style pick-ups, plus a J-style bridge pick-up, with a 9-volt battery for the active boost. The passive tone setting is OK, it is definitely quieter than I would have thought, compared to the JB2 which has a strong passive presence. The active setting is in my view definitely needed to get clear and clean gain, although leaving the dial to mid-level produces a cleaner tone than turned all the way up. The tone controls for blending the pickups works well, no issues with this. Combined with the bass and treble controls, everything does what it needs to do, with the ability to get near to the right balance between the two. Again, compared to a name-brand entry-level bass, you really cannot tell the difference by ear. In terms of the look and feel, the white gloss finish looks very sharp, and there were no observable marks or defects. Construction and joinery feel and look solid. The neck and frets play very cleanly, I didn't notice any marks, scuffs or rough edges. There's been some comment about the width of the neck, personally I haven't found this to be an issue. I find it more comfortable to play than the JB2 which has a narrower neck from the 5th to 1st fret. Children or those with smaller stature would find a bass a challenge to play, and at full-scale length with medium-jumbo frets, maybe this isn't the best option. The weight of the P-J is really well balanced, feeling comfortable for extended practice sessions. Tuning is easy, the strings hold their correct pitch once set. The bridge and truss rod positions were fine, I didn't get any fret buzz or find it difficult to hold down against the frets. The only thing that I was not entirely happy about is the quality of the tone knobs and the pick guard - compared to the JB2 model, these fittings feel and look cheap. I guess you have to make some trade-offs to get an instrument down to an achievable cost. Time will tell how durable they are. There's also no manual, it really would be nice to have even a link or QR code to a manual. I resorted to taking a screen shot off the product page. Straight-to-right-angle 3ft lead, .71mm pick and hex key included.

Thank you so much for the details review and feedback. I have sent you an email to address the feedback you had with the knobs, pickguard and manual. Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions or concerns. Cheers!

Looks great, sounds good. Neck like a RL forward.

I bought this bass for my son to learn on. My basses are from the 70’s and I wanted him to have an instrument to treat as his own. This Artist bass is really good value. Options for both passive and active circuitry are a good idea. The action is passable and the tone is good. My beef is with the thickness of the neck. It is much thicker than my Jazz or P bass, which does not help a beginner player get a relaxed feel for the instrument. At the nut, my P bass is 38mm across. This bass is a massive 42mm! Is that a neck from a 5string? Too tough for young hands.

Such great value!

By: on 19 November 2020
Firstly, the bass arrived by courier in record time! (Within two days of Artist Guitars receiving their shipment from overseas!) Now to the bass itself....absolutely flawless finish, basically mint, nice neck, no problems at all! The sound is first class, plus the fact that, being passive/active electronics, there is enough tones for everyone! I will end this by saying that the best way to describe the bass is, when I put it through its paces, it already sounded like a recorded instrument, so how good is that? I have a Squire Precision bass, and a Yamaha model, and this particular AG model is actually equivalent, or better, to be honest! Oh, I almost forgot.....the price is definitely right on this one! I have to give this bass 5 stars+++! Thanks again, Artist Guitars!

Yeah Loved it has a great range of sound however the jack port contently comes loose no matter how tight i screw it and recently mid way through a gig it straight up fell out leaving me to re solder the wires and hasn't worked since. Great bass for short term,

Just buy it

A good beginner bass

By: on 5 June 2020
The Artist Vintage Hybrid P-J styled Bass, is a pretty good bass for the price. You have more knobs than you could think of, perfect for procrastinating, (we all know finding the right tone is more important than practising). Over all I’m very happy with bass, looks good, sounds good, plays well, and at that price point there is no competition!

Artist Vintage Hybrid, a P-J styled Bass White

By: on 5 March 2020
I just received my Bass the Artist Vintage Hybrid, a P-J styled Bass white, and I'm really impressed. First off no fret sprout and only need a minimum set up, a slight truss rod adjustment and string height to where I like it. Intonation was great straight out of the box, it only need a tune up and its good to go..!! it sounds great, I really love the PJ pickups. All my instruments are now from Artist Guitars now..!!

Great Bass

By: on 10 August 2018
Very pleased with the guitar, sounds, looks and plays beautifully. Disappointed that there was no manual provided or even a basic guide. I have been playing in bands for over 50 years and have always had a guide or manual in every new guitar or amp that I have purchased. This bass has no guide to what the switch and the four knobs do. I had to contact Artist and find out, obviously I was regarded as an idiot for asking such stupid questions as everyone knows what they do, I felt sarcasm and started to feel embarrassed so I finished the discussion. I purchased an amp the next day from another supplier and it arrived in 28 hours with included manual from Sydney, my bass took 7 days to arrive. Excellent Bass, but delivery very slow, no manual or basic guide, and sarcasm is not customer service

Great Value

I am a professional guitarist who does the odd bass gig on the side. I needed a bass but I didn't have the funds for a Fender. I bought this bass thinking that as long as it is playable I could always update the electronics and get something that sounds ok. No need! I am delighted! This instrument plays well straight out of the box. All it needs are some decent strings. It sounds great. In time I will update the parts that I think might let me down: the tuners look a bit flimsy, as does the bridge. These parts are subjected to a lot of pressure on a bass. A set of strap locks and away we go. I am so astounded by the quality of this bass I will probably buy another pretty soon.

Artist Vintage Hybrid P-J styled Bass White

By: on 31 August 2017
I own a Squire Jazz which is great and an old cheap P bass knock off which is terrible. This was meant to be a replacement for the P Bass that also gave me the Jaco sounds I sometimes like. I thought active tone controls made this also look attractive. It arrived 2 semitones out of tune but otherwise ready for action. I don't think a setup is required. The sound is far better than the Squire and the active controls enhance it greatly. The playability is also first class. No fret buzz or sharp frets. Amazing value.

Great Sounding bass for a good price.

Best value bass EVER!!!

By: on 17 June 2017
I have owned several Fender P basses and one is still my main workhorse but something about this Artist P/J Bass got me lusting for it. The reviews were good enough for me to order one and I am very glad I did. It played nicely straight out of the box and the only thing that is a teeny, weeny, tiny annoying is the neck dive which probably will not be a problem while I'm jumping around like an idiot on stage. I cannot fault the fit and finish on this beautiful bass. The neck does feel slightly fuller than my Fender but it is not a problem. The full range of sounds available should suit every taste. For such a low price you must get your self one before they sell out and Artist release their next (i'm sure it will also be very nice) bass. Just buy one!!!! You deserve it.
