Artist AJB5 Lava Orange Active/Passive Hybrid 5-String Bass Guitar

Introducing the Artist AJB5, a modern 5-string bass designed for players who want extended range, powerful tone, and dependable performance in a lightweight, stage-ready instrument. Built with a lightweight paulownia body finished in lava orange matte nitrocellulose, a quarter-sawn roasted Canadian maple neck, and a smooth rosewood fretboard, the AJB5 combines classic feel with modern flexibility.

The ultra-thin satin nitro neck finish and lightweight machine heads help keep the instrument balanced and resonant, while the chrome-plated bridge provides excellent sustain, tuning stability, and tight low-end response. Premium appointments, including a 45mm bone nut, hand-finished stainless steel frets, luminous side dots, copper foil shielding, and locking strap buttons, give the AJB5 a refined feel built for regular gigging and studio work alike.

Equipped with a pair of high-output Alnico V single-coil pickups and a versatile active/passive preamp system, the AJB5 delivers everything from warm vintage-style punch to modern clarity and aggressive low-end articulation. The flexible control layout includes master volume and tone controls, pickup selection, dedicated treble adjustment, plus stacked mid and bass EQ controls for detailed sound shaping across any genre.

Finished with a vintage green three-ply pickguard, black control knobs, and chrome hardware, the AJB5 blends classic bass styling with the extended range and tonal versatility modern players demand. Whether you're holding down the groove live or tracking in the studio, the AJB5 is built to deliver powerful performance night after night.

Top Shelf 5 String

By: on 9 June 2026
First of all - what a relief to have a 5 string bass body made of this wood ... t is so much lighter than your average instrument in this size. Unreal matte orange finish as is pretty common with Artist's range. Great frets/edges (super smooth), neck feels super slick and just the right size to provide solid anchoring for a 5 string. Incredibly wide range of sound - from super thin honky tones to gigantic thundering low end. Sounds truly incredible in both passive and active modes. I prefer this one to a couple of my similar instruments in the $4k range as the pickups/preamp sound a little more open in this one and the lighter body weight means I can play longer without a dead leg in the studio. Only one minor thing to look out for that was an issue on mine - the hole in the bridge for the B string to thread through is a bit too small. It comes strung with a 130 B round wound. I put flat wounds on with the same size B but they have cloth-threaded ends near the string nut and it couldn't pass through due to the cloth. Drilled it out with a 4.5mm bit for what it's worth. Ultimately extremely minor and a 15min fix. What a beast of an instrument - do not hesitate if you're a pro player.
