Great Kit

By: on 19 November 2025
I wanted a semi hollow body and I wanted to customise it myself. This was a great kit, the plug and play pickups required no soldering which was a pleasant surprise. neck was great, required little setup. Only issue I had was the pre-drilled holes for the saddle were not perfectly aligned which required me to bend the hooks slightly to make it fit.

Read before buying

Read this before buying this kit ... Intro Inspired by John Lennons casino I first stained the wood in English Breakfast Tea and then blonde french polished it. I also bought gold dial knobs and cream pick-up brackets. Now finally done i have a one of one magnificent guitar that i can play plugged in or acoustically very softly. It does things that no other guitar (strats ... single cut ... filtertron ... p90's ... humbucker) i've got, does. Given the result it's definitely worth it. Review As the kit arrived I would give a 3 out of 5. Executive Summary But once (see below for more details) a) the pots' wire harness issue b) ground wire hole c.1) the holes drilled for the pots etc c.2) the washers to cover the holes as too small) d) output jack issues where simplified e) the cable management is under control f) the two cavities are merged the kit is amazing ... Eventually 6 out of 5 stars ... considering the price. Issues A & C & D A) The order of the components for the output harness is not wired correctly if you want to stop the red and black cables from criss crossing the F hole. C) Therefore the holes are not drilled for the top correctly. When i installed the switch/output/pot harness I went ... from the Bridge Pickup (added a cable management bracket) going out on top and back in underneath ... Neck Volume (drilled for the pick up pick-up selector i had to use an oversized washer to cover the hole) Neck tone Switch (pot hol is drilled too small i had to enlarge) -> Output jack (D) (routed a hole so i could use a strat output jack cover also added a cable management bracket) <- Bridge tone Bridge volume (added a cable management bracket to pass in front aka neck side of the f-hole) back into the pickups. Issue B The ground wire hole is minimal. (Wasted 30 mintes trying) So i spent 5 minutes to enlarge it which made getting that wire into the post hole possible rather than impossible. Eventually i recall a 2.5 - 3 mm drill bit was used. Because ... unlike on a solid body where the hole is obvious. It is so far back from the F hole. It would be way easier if the factory just drilled a biger hole. Issue E Many extremely long wires for this kit. Please consider including some cable ties and some plastic cable brackets with sticky foam on them to adhere to the guitar. Otherwise go to the shops and buy your own for less. (Might add 10$ to the kit's cost. I've added button piezo pick-ups to classical guitars so i hade some cable management brackets from the kits i bought, so i used them Modded 1.a Routed a hole to fit a strat style output jack angled towards the strap button (up and left as you face the guitar) 1.b Routing the hole into the face of the guitar also allows access to the output/pick-up switch area good for switch and output installation. 1.c As well as making cable management easier. Three bracket where used, 1 on the exit of the pickup cavity 2 near the strat output hole 3 on the neck side of the bottom F-hole. Doing all this made the finiky job of harness insilation much easier, but also required tools time and patience some may not have. Having cables not visable made the final build aestheticly pleasing. Issue F Using a dremmel and a very steady hand i drilled the through body plank of wood's sides out into the cavity around the pickup to merge the guitar's two cavities under each f-hole to allow more resonance (closer to a fully hollow body.) Thanks for reading this far.

With about 50 bucks worth of finishing materials (I used Aussie Oil for the body and just regular black spraypaint for the headstock) and maybe about 8 hours of work (maybe spread over a few days, and mostly spent on the finish), it's absolutely beautiful. The actual assembly is fairly straight forward, I didn't find an instruction set in mine, nor could I find a manual for this model on the website, (like they have for the Strat and Tele models) but the fact that all the components were in numbered bags grouped in with all their correct screws and fasteners was actually all that I ended up needing in order to assemble the guitar in an hour or two (maybe a little more, but only due to the fiddly nature of installing the electronics in semi-hollows) The nut seems like bone or at least high quality fake bone, the frets are great, no burrs or spikes, the bridge was intonated pretty bang on from the factory, and the neck was dead straight, all the electronics and hardware is obviously not going to be top of the line but it all works and feels solid. The pickups are the same, not going to blow you away but theyre actually good enough that I will keep them for a little while, instead of replacing them straight away like I initially intended, however they are quite microphonic (personally I think microphonic pickups are fun and cool but floating boats ect) In comparison to buying a factory finished guitar, buying a DIY kit is so much more of an experience, you get to set the fit and finish up (or down) to your own standards, and you end up with an instrument that is unique and well and truly YOURS. These don't require some luthier levels of experience either, If anyone is doubting their ability to make one of these without mucking it up, it's easy and there is a TONNE of helpful tutorials and material online to help in every step. Couldn't recommend more 10/10

Very light Guitar without all the metal bits attached, and the next thing that strike me is the excellent grain of the back and belly/top of this guitar. the grain is every bit as nice as in the photos on the Artist Guitars web site. The maple neck is beautiful, Perfectly sanded just how you would expect from an artist guitars product and it also has lovely grain if you care for that sort of thing. Expertly packed for shipping so that the Pickups and Machine heads won't go flying around and smashing things up . The quick connect wiring harness is a very nice addition. Some people might immediately replace the small volume and tone pots with bigger one's but i wont, bigger pots will be much harder to fit through the f holes than the smaller ones, I own the Artist Walnut 58 Semi Hollow Electric Guitar W/Humbuckers and it has similar wiring and it has not let me down. it' also one of my most Perved on Guitars, in fact all Artist Guitars are Extremely Pervable which is probably why i spend so much time on the Artist Guitars web site. Only thing i don't like is the already glued in neck. as a guitar maker myself i would prefer to be the one to glue it in but i understand this has been done to help someone on their first build. Maybe Artist Guitars could offer both Glued and Un Glued versions in the future. A small instruction sheet showing orientation of the Humbuckers and the easiest way to install the output jack and orientation of volume and tone pots would be a valuable tool for those new to guitar making. Mines going to be Red, Red like the fires of HELL.
