An unbeatable value unit where pragmatic performan

I bought this SP108 portable PA from Artist Guitars in August 2018. Having used it now for just over two years, I thought I might post a hands on review in 2020 sans new user emotion or pride. First, Artist Guitars. Bought from them many times since 2017. As usual, customer service communication, prompt dispatch and delivery were beyond reproach. Product value remarkable. Like many potential buyers of this system, I expect like myself at the time they'll be weighing it up in comparison with Yamaha's current Stagepas 400 portable PA at twice the SP108's price. When I bought mine, that ratio in favour of Superlux was even more advantageous. As I've quite a few Superlux products now, and hold the brand in esteem, I already recognised what its quality would be like, and likely price:performance acceptability ratio. Obviously I bought, and wasn't disappointed despite minor criticisms I'll elaborate upon shortly. In direct feature & performance comparison terms, the SP108 300W system is closer in feature set and performance to the venerable Stagepas 300 which was superseded by the current 400, yet that's accolade in itself. I should add that I also hold Yamaha in esteem, owning multiples of their acoustic and electric guitars, keyboard products, soundbar and HT audio receiver in our HT room. Superlux's SP108 is made in China to Taiwan based Superlux design spec. The whole system including the mixer unit is solidly built, functional and aesthetically appealing. Of note however, there is no integral speaker stand mount within the SP108 speaker units, so external speaker brackets are required at additional cost, but which still comes out streets ahead of the Yamaha's unit's price inclusive. I recommend buying the genuine Superlux SP04 brackets from Artist. They fit the SP108 speaker mounting perfectly, which several generic standard brackets won't without modification, and are stronger than generics I've bought when the SP04s were unavailable awaiting the next importation shipment. They also mount the Superlux speakers on the speaker stands more securely and squarely. I didn't have an issue with their external mount aesthetic the previous poster did, nor consider the initial factory fastening of the mounting bolts in their metal threads of consequence to anyone with a metric socket set in the garage. The 8 channels of the mixer unit controls are well laid out. External devices can be connected for MP3 or other source playback. There is no 3.5mm MP3 port nor USB port input, but an inexpensive 3.5mm port or jack to stereo RCA cable adapter functionally alters that for that AUX input functionality if required. No integrated Bluetooth if that's important. I wasn't for me as I use an inexpensive rechargable TaoTronics BT 5.0 RX/TX adapter to offer that functionality on this and my amps should I want it. Very reliable, it works reliably e.g. with any smartphone. If BT functionality is a buy or not decider, this accessory offering BT interface functionality can be had for around AUD$30. Reverb on/off and mix balance, mic voice or music selectivity for bass boost, and lots more, the SP108 is amazing for the $$$. The sound quality is well and truly acceptable to my ear, although I find the bass response tends to boomy with bass boost applied to DI vs mic'd if cranked to max, which in most venues you'd deploy this unit orientated to an acoustic and vocal accompaniment performance, wouldn't be required. Although I have seven amps including an Acoustasonic with mic support, this was my first and remains my only PA, so I have no comparison with the Stagepas 300 or 400 characteristics in that regard. It's dialable and controllable, so within performance for price I consider the overall sound quality acceptable for my needs/purpose. Mixer unit fan noise. Yes it has one, and yes it's audible in any very quiet environment when standing adjacent the mixer unit without performance occurring/music playing. Unfortunately, Superlux chose to implement a high speed slow volume fan for internal cooling in this unit. Without question, a monster heatsink and no fan or low speed high volume fan would have been preferable were it possible without compromising reliability or longevity, which I expect were Superlux's objectives. The fan runs running continually any time the mixer unit is powered and switched on. Although I agree with him in that I'd prefer it wasn't there, I don't find it as irritating as the previous poster implied, and it didn't cause me to return the unit to Artist nor would it prevent me buying this unit for purpose again. In saying that, at the time I bought, there was a significantly greater price difference between the SP108 and SP110 portable PA systems and price was as important to me as purpose recognising that that fan noise becomes inaudible and a moot factor once performance commences. In summary, I bought it for acoustic and vocal solo and duo home studio and small venue, mate's place use, ope

Superlux SP108 300 Compact Portable PA System

I received my Superlux SP108 in pretty much record time from Artist Guitars. I have purchased a number of things from them before, but it's always a great surprise to receive such prompt service, backed up by excellent after sales service. I love dealing with this company, they are always attentive and professional & happy to deal with any issues. My first experience of the SP108 was twofold - delight & then not so pleased. First of all - the good stuff. For the price, this compact system is a joy to use, easy to set up - and only with the glaring omission of Bluetooth - sets an excellent standard in terms of performance. I tried it at an outdoors market - I am a solo artist, guitar, vocals & stompbox - there was enough power to do the job, vocals & guitar crystal clear. A bit lacking at the bass end, but that's to be expected and did not detract from a pleasant performance overall. Now, to the not-so-good stuff. When I unpacked the speakers & stands, I noticed the bolts to fit the stand adapters were already installed. They were just crazily tight & in the end I used a "rattle gun" to remove them. It is obvious that the bolts are inserted when the black paint (or coating) is still not set and this effectively glues the bolts to the speakers. Once these were removed, I fitted the stands using the adapters provided. A word of caution here - the adapters are not "speaker specific", it is obvious that they are built to fir other speakers as well and as a result they really looked bolted on - very inelegant, Superlux. Why not just folloe the lead of the 500Watt system & have moulded holes for the speaker stands? So now to my main irritation - FAN NOISE! Yes, it really is that noisy, I was so displeased with this that I asked for another set to be sent to me - well, I paid for another SP108 so I could compare the two systems side by side. It is clear that 2 fans are used, both of which are extremely noisy and distracting in a quiet environment - rather like a hairdrier on medium setting - not pleasant at all. However, I have kept the second system for now. I recommended the 500watt system to one of our markets, they purchased it and the fan noise is almost non-existent. This is really something that should be sorted out by Superlux. I know it's a budget system, but the small upgrade cost to the 500w system give you moulded holes for the speakers & pretty much silent running plus more power. I would love to rate this 5 stars, but I've cut off one star for the bolt extraction and awful adapters, and one star for the noisy mixer. Clearing up those issues would make this a 5 star superb budget PA system.
