About this Superlux R102 MKII Ribbon Microphone + Shock Mount + Pop Filter + XLR Lead

The R102 MKII is an active aluminum ribbon microphone designed for the recording studio and professional live performances. It features the high sensitivity, yet exhibits the smoother frequency response and excellent transient response of a ribbon microphone. The fast speed response of a ribbon mic is optimal among all types of microphones. The R102MKII is a ribbon microphone with extended high frequency to studio condenser grade, but keep the same excellent transient response of ribbon microphones. Classical ribbon microphones will exhibit a roll off in high-frequency response, but the R102 MKII is a breakthrough ribbon microphone that can maintain high frequency response up to 18 kHz. For people who love ribbon style but expect extended High Frequencies, the R102MKII would be the perfect microphone for you.

Nice flat response ribbon

By: on 16 November 2022
Great flat response ribbon mic. It’s not clear from the shop post what you get with the Mk2 over the Mk1. So… Pretty gold mesh is the only cosmetic difference on the mic. The response curve implies wider frequency response. I’m not convinced it really goes to 15k, but that’s probably because it does not have any high frequency bumps. I like to have some flat response mics in the locker, and this certainly is that. But takes eq lovely, and does not get tizzy. On vocals added all the brightness I needed with eq And never became harsh. (Slate N73 eq etc) The case is substantial fits all the bits. Has a cloth cover for the mic – I like this as I generally move my ribbons around the room covered. Very useful long XLR cable with right angle female end to accommodate the cradle set up (more about the cradle below). Full mic mount is good. Metal and on a par with other mounts. The metal pop filter is small and sits very close to the mic. Clips in nicely. I’m not sure if I like it or not. Probably helps, but the mics are sensitive, so I prefer a bigger pop filter some distance from the mic, to keep the singer away. It does have a pleasant proximity effect, that’s to be expected with any ribbon. The other mic mount ‘the cradle’ is okay. Had an issue with not being able to lock in position, but that was just because a washer had been but in improperly. Unscrew from the base and turn it over and tighten up again and its all good. Both of my mics had this issue so it must be a production error in China, not a design error! See details in my review of the mk1 Artist Guitars were great to deal with. There was a minor delay by the couriers and Artist Guitars kept me up to date with this without being asked. Good work, thank you. Good purchase experience. Mics a good flat response mic without the annoying modern trend of high freq boost. Be great for overheads and tizzy guitar amps. And lovely on vocals. Recommend 5 stars.

Great smooth sounding ribbon mic at a bargain price...and as it requires phantom power it will probably last longer than most ribbons!

All round smooth and warm mic

I purchased the mic for voice-over projects in my studio. Ribbon mics are known for smooth low end and dull hights, but the R102 Mk II having extended top end, makes it very suitable for any application. I have already done few voice-over takes and this mic sounds fantastic! It's clean, sensative and well balanced for the audio spectrum required for voice-over. It delivers that powerful low-mid vocal frequencies very well. Using it for vocals singing pop songs also performed well, both for male and female vocals. On acoustic guitars, once you position it right, slightly towards the neck and 40cm to 50cm away, it captures the strings nicely too. I would recommend micing the acoustic guitars with a condenser and have the R102 as a room mic to give a stereo effect. I have not yet tried them on my acoustic drums. I'm sure as a room mic or even overhead mic will sound great too. For the price, it's one of the best. It does deliver.
