Artist GM1BARI Baritone Electric Guitar with Bullbuckers

By popular demand, our Artist Grungemaster has undergone a transformation: introducing our Grungemaster Baritone! The Grungemaster is one of our most popular models, and due to fantastic customer feedback and a huge amount of interest, we are proud to introduce the slightly-altered Baritone version!

With the same Poplar body, Canadian Maple Neck and Eco-Rosewood Fretboard, this model of course features a longer, 27" scale-length and new Dot inlays on the fretboard. We’ve chosen our very popular Bullbucker pickups for this guitar, and their broad, throaty response is perfect for lower frequencies. We’ve also altered the controls and control plate, and we’ve equipped a black pickguard to match the darker aesthetic of this gorgeous new Baritone model.

The GM1BARI features a Chrome Stop-Bar Tailpiece, and the Bullbuckers are chrome-covered with the vintage-style machine heads completing the look. The longer scale length and sturdy construction make these guitars perfect for lower tunings, and Baritones are very popular for heavier genres. Plug in your favourite chorus pedal for those classic Robert Smith tones or crank your amp to max if you’re more of a Petrucci fan, the GM1BARI covers a lot of ground!

The GM1BARI comes strung with 11-56 gauge strings and set up for B Standard. If you’d like to use thicker strings, you may need to adjust the nut. The guitar features a dual-action truss rod and the adjustable bridge and saddles ensure this guitar can be easily set up for various low tunings. We also have resources on our site to help you with this, just reach out if you need any assistance!

Great Baritone Guitar

This guitar feels and sounds great to play, the quality felt close to a $1000 dollar guitar I own. Very happy with this product for the price!

A good baritone

This is a good electric baritone guitar at a great price. Everything works well - the controls, pickups, switching slider - the frets and neck are good. Very happy with this purchase at $299.

Awesome for the price!

By: on 10 September 2024
This little beauty of a baritone is perfect for a budget guitar when you want something that extends to the lower range. It's wonderfully made and looks very sleek! Comes with fairly light gauge strings that are very easy to play, but do lack some low end oomph. Easily remedied by chucking on some heavier gauge strings. Just all round fantastic for the price!

Damn Near Perfect

By: on 4 September 2024
There's no doubt this has the usual Artist guitar quality which is to say it's unbeatable for the price and top notch! It looks great, it's built great, it plays great and it sounds great. So if you need a bang for buck baritone this is 100% it. The only issue I found was the 11-56 strings felt a bit too loose when tuned to B Standard but I'd already planned on changing to 13-62 strings so a quick file of the nut and restring fixed the issue (Would love a 28" or 30" scale variant to go with it.)

Amazing Value Baritone!

By: on 12 August 2024
This is my first baritone guitar, always wanted one but they were out of my price range. Artist to the rescue once again, this is my 3rd Artist guitar and definitely my favourite so far, that slight extended range really enables some nice chug for the doom metal that I'm trying to create, even sounds heavier than my seven string. Can't really fault it so far, thanks to Artist for bring the value and quality to a sometimes overpriced market.

Artist GM1BARI: Great Standalone and Mod Potential

By: on 9 August 2024
Great value guitar, both standalone and for modding potential. I quickly equipped some mammoth slinky strings for big bends (a bit lighter than baritone slinky), adjusted setup, and went to B-standard town. As is said in the description - the nut slots needs to be filed slightly if you are fitting heavier gauge strings. The hardware and electronics are sturdy and smooth, those with a bit more experience may want to adjust the value of the tone pot to get a more even roll off. The Bullbucker pickups are great, they have a nice rounded sound that captures the full range of frequencies without any harshness. I have yet to try them on stage, but they provided a good range of clean and dirty sounds through guitar and bass rigs, as well as DI/sims in the studio. The sonic profile of the neck and bridge pickups are quite similar, if you plan to gig or record with this instrument I would recommend swapping one of them out to help diversify the tone - I plan on putting a P90 in the neck. The finish on the body and neck are nothing flashy, but perfectly clean and smooth for a good look and comfortable feel. The highlight of this instrument is the fretwork, the frets on this instrument are fantastic for the price point. 5 star rating - This guitar punches above it's price point. The minor criticisms I have are based on stylistic choices or modifications to increase versatility in live and studio settings. This is a great option for heavy tones and rounded lows without breaking the bank.

Gm1Baritone

Nice rig. Had some tuning issues with the lower E string, mostly buzzing. Heavier strings may have solved it, however I wanted to give this a good time with the lighter strings. The lighter strings allow more use of the 3 high strings like a standard git, triads, bending, chords etc. Really wanted a bass VI for the lower octave, only the Baritone was closer to what I liked. To get the bass sound that the bass VI would have provided, I just put the barri through an octave pedal. Artists made a fine instrument in the GM1 Baritone at an awsome price point. Took a bit to sort the lower E string buzz. I choose not to go straight to a heavier string set as I would've needed to open up the nut groove to suit the larger E string. Will go there at some point, but not now. Four star for the easy of playing and wonderful overall package for the price. -1 star for my time in sorting out the lower E string. Its a keeper. Yeh, all sorted and sounds sweet as. Regards.

Bass VI

By: on 14 June 2024
As a bass player looking to explore a bit more for a new project, I picked this up on a whim with the plan to convert it to a cheap bass VI. Of course after clicking purchase and the guitar on its way, almost every single thing I read online stated that the 27” scale would be too short to run E to e tuning. A few emails back and forth with Artist (excellent customer service BTW), were hesitant to recommend setting it up as a bass VI, but for the price I was willing to give it a shot. New strings (Ernie Ball bass VI 90-20), filing of the nut and slight drilling of the stop tailpiece made it work with standard tuning. Next step is to install tuners with split shafts to accept the heavier gauge strings and set it up properly. For the price point, the guitar plays great. Running through same rig as my Kramer metal neck bass (Acoustic 470 amp, two EV TL-606 15” cabs and a Tronographic Rusty Box pre-amp pedal) it sounds incredible. Enough bottom end, with nice bright high notes and the perfect “klang” sound that I love (RIP Steve Albini). The neck feels perfect, no issues with the frets and the weight is really really nice. 5 stars for the shipping and customer service. Will definitely purchase more from Artist in the future.

Grunge perfected!

By: on 10 June 2024
I’ve never previously had a baritone guitar so wasn’t sure what to expect but once again Artist have produced a guitar that does everything it says on the box & then some. Neck is comfortable, smooth & straight, no sharp feet ends to bother me, intonation only slightly out on one string & action straight out of the box is very playable. The tuners are a little stiff but do the job without issue. Pickups are damn good for a budget guitar, Artist’s Bullbuckers exceed my expectations here. Controls are simple & feel positive, not sure if it’s supposed to be this way but the pickup selector switch sits in a forward/backward position instead of up/down which I actually prefer. It’s pretty light for a guitar with a long neck & is well balanced, no neck dive experienced when playing standing up. After I’ve played it in for a while I will add a graphite nut & some heavier strings for lower tuning but other than maybe some better tuners I won’t be changing a thing!

GM1BARI Baritone Electric Guitar w/ Bullbuckers

By: on 9 June 2024
Great guitar and that's even before you take price into consideration. Arrived setup and intonated straight out of the box. I've managed to tune mine to D standard without having to change the string gauge. I'm a P90 guy so have swapped the pickups out but to my ears the "bullbuckers" sounded great and were well rounded with no harshness (mind you they didn't get much of a workout before being promptly swapped out for my preferred standards). The lower tuning songs I do now intonate far better (especially discordant voicings ) so I'm stoked. Thanks for providing such an awesome axe for such a fair price, it's very refreshing in this day and age.

Bariton

By: on 17 May 2024
Very pleased with the prompt delivery and great service. This is a quality instrument, especially for the price. Well made and cleanly finished instrument, aside from a few mysterious blemishes in the pickguard - I suspect shopsoiled? The neck plays well, with a smooth finish and comfortable contour. The pickups are quite responsive, with a variety of rich and clean tones available. I may consider replacing the tone control for something more dynamic - the current one does not affect the tone as much as I would like. The instrument arrived with a basic setup, but the action will benefit from a proper leveling - at present it is too easy to sharpen the tuning by pressing down in the lower positions. I will also investigate stringing options, as the set it arrived with seems very low tension, but this may just be a baritone thing. I am tuning it in B (a fourth below) and I may be using the wrong gauge for this. Either way, I am enjoying getting to know what this instrument is capable of, very pleased on the whole.

GM1BARI Baritone guitar.

By: on 17 April 2024
Straight out of the box this guitar was set up, string height and intonation bang on. I’d already ordered a set of slinky baritone strings for it, so modified the nut a little to take the fat e-string, and fitted them. Great guitar, awesome tone, plays very nicely. (Except string bending is near impossible, not a fault with the guitar). Not that keen on the tuners, tho guitar stays in tune, so they’ll stay for now.

Great with a little work

By: on 16 April 2024
Really solid guitar, but strange it comes set up with strings much too light for most baritone tunings. It was clear about this so I got it knowing I would need to file the nut slots and adjust the setup. I put 13-72 strings on it and tuned it like the lowest 6 of an 8 string and it works great. If it came set up with something like 12-68 strings it would be an easy 5 star rating, but needing to take a file to it to put on appropriate strings (and probably voiding the warranty) is not ideal. I'm very happy with it though.

If you're going to dabble with a baritone, read on

By: on 14 April 2024
I have been keen on trying a baritone for a while. But, not being someone who really uses low tunings, I wasn't sure how I'd feel about it. I decided on this over a 7-string because I thought I'd probably approach a 7-string from a 6-string perspective and largely end up avoiding the 7th string. After a read through the specs and reviews of this guitar, I signed up for the in stock notification and waited patiently. When the email came through, I bought one... For this price, if baritone wasn't going to be my thing then I won't feel like i've made a huge mistake. When I pulled it out of the box, like the other Artist guitars I own, I laid eyes on a stunning looking instrument. When I strummed for the first time however, I was confused... the guitar was out of tune (of course), but it was out of tune from standard E tuning. Looking back through the specs, the guitar was fitted with 10-46's but no mention of the tuning. I tried to tune it down to what I thought was standard baritone tuning (B standard - 5 semitones lower), and sure enough the buzz was huge. No good. I tried 3 semitones lower... still buzzing. Next day I visited the closest guitar shop and bought some 12-54 strings, and tried putting them on when I got home. These strings were too wide for the nut grooves, so I jumped onto Amazon and ordered some guitar nut files, which arrived the following day. When I got the 12's on with some slight nut adjustments, I tuned it down to C standard and it was brilliant. I tried B standard - no issues, and I've settled on C# standard. Other than the string gauge change and nut adjustment, I've had to do nothing else. Action is great, intonation is spot on, and the pickups sound pretty great (I expected them to sound a bit flabby, but they is tight). Other than the wait (for the guitar to come into stock, and the strings and files etc.), I can find no fault with this guitar. If you're considering a baritone, don't start with anything more expensive... the price does not do any justice to the quality of this instrument. You won't need to upgrade any components, and you won't need to buy a more expensive one later on! Do it, before they're out of stock again!

Deep Into The Baritone World

By: on 2 January 2024
I have always wanted a baritone guitar but was never willing to pay a lot of money for a guitar that might only get played once in a while. I had even been seriously thinking about building one. Then Artist Guitars came up with GM1BARI Baritone Electric Guitar with Bullbuckers. That was a surprise in itself. Then the second surprise was when I saw the price tag. So I read all the Tech Features and decided there and then I'm buying one. I kept telling myself don't raise your hopes to high for this one, for that price it can't be anything special. With that in mind I already had plans for an upgrade or two. As usual like everything I've bought from Artist Guitars it arrived ahead of the ETA. The baritone looks much better than the pictures on the website. To my amazement every fret end was smooth the neck was perfect so no truss rod adjustment required. It had a nice low action setup so no need to change anything there. Even the pickups were closer to the strings than any other guitar out of the box I've ever had. Again no adjustment required. So a quick tune, the intonation was out as you would expect but not by much. Then I switched it on and OMG! I felt like I was on top of the world. The amazing chug and brightness of tone and clarity in every note was amazing. I was in total disbelief. Every guitar I've bought from Artist Guitars ( Indominus8, Spiritus7, LP6G Cimmerian and 2x Gnosis6FR.) all went beyond my expectations. But the GM1BARI has well and truly gone beyond those expectations by leaps and bounds. This has got to be the most amazing buy of the century! I've got Bullbucker pickups in another guitar but they sound so much better in the Baritone. That was one of the upgrades I had planed to change the pickups to the Nazgul & Sentient Set from Seymour Duncan which I have done since. But it was a tough decision as the Bullbuckers did sound very good. The set of strings that came with the Bari out of the box that everyone was rubbishing were not that bad if you kept it in standard B baritone tuning. I made an adjustment with the nut and changed the strings to D'Addario EXL157 14-68 Electric Baritone Guitar Strings at the same time when I changed the pickups. And believe me with these modifications this Baritone doesn't sound anything like a bottom end entry level guitar. Even with the cost all the changes I made you still can't buy any other Baritone Guitar for close to this price. So all in all the GM1BARI Baritone Electric Guitar with Bullbuckers is an absolute steal for the price. You can't go wrong as it is perfectly awesome as it comes or a superb option to upgrade. Oh, you know how I said I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a guitar that might only get played once in a while.... Well I haven't touched any of my other guitars since I got this Baritone. Thank You Artist Guitars for the best buy ever!

A well-crafted low-end machine

This instrument was on my "want" list for a long time, and I have to say, it was worth the wait. All notes are clearly articulated, the electronics are of a high quality and the set up out of the box was impeccable. I just have no idea how Artist does it!

Good and not so good, but issue dealt with immedia

By: on 12 April 2023
I bought this as a cheaper way to try a baritone guitar and for the price I can hardly think of buying another big name name guitar. The pickups are excellent and very powerful, and the neck is perfectly straight. Like another reviewer I found the supplied strings too loose. I changed to D'Addario EXL 157 68-14 and it transformed the sound and playability. One tip though, you will need to widen and deepen the lowest string position of the nut, otherwise it sits way too high. Artist do no supply a suitable nut and have advised changing it myself could void the warranty . I had an issue with some of the tuners when I changed the strings. The posts stopped rotating and eventually fell out of the housings and couldn't be fixed. Artist immediately supplied a complete set of new tuners, one of which was also faulty but I had enough good ones to complete the job. They also very generously gave some replacement strings for the ones lost in the process. I may buy better quality tuners if the current ones fail, as all-in-all this is a guitar I want to keep.

this guitar is so much value for the money though i purchased it on preorder the wait was well worth it.. it is an excellent instrument as a backup baritone to my $3k parts caster it stacks up pretty nicely .. I have molded it by putting hipshot locking tuners and seymour duncan NAZGUL and SENTIENT pups... it's freakin heavy.. an outstanding instrument out of the box and is a great platform for modding if that is your preference.. I'm Very Happy.. thanks ARTIST GUUTARS

Fantastic guitar at this price

By: on 8 March 2023
I have been wanting a baritone for ages, but have also been hesitant dropping a lot on a guitar that I may or may not play a lot. I was looking at Squier offerings, but that was a bit more than I was willing to sink in for a tuning that I have no experience with. I pre-ordered this bad boy. Out of the box, the set up wasn't great, and as another reviewer wrote, the string gauge was not at all appropriate, and the set up was all over the place. Tuning stability was non-existent with that factory gauge. Also, the fretboard was very dry, but I used a bit of lemon oil which sorted that quickly. I picked up a set of baritone strings (68-12) and set this up in B standard. It did require a set up to handle the strings. Truss, bridge, and nut. After all this, the guitar plays beautifully! The tuners are quality, and I am really happy with this guitar. The bullbuckers are good, but have never been my taste, so have put a set of humbucker-sized P90s I picked up cheap, and really loving this!! The out of box experience for me is the only reason this didn't get full marks. For me, it's fine, as I don't mind tinkering and bringing guitars to their best possible form, but a less experience person might not have felt the same.

Oh my lordy...

By: on 17 February 2023
I've been waiting months for this moment. The guitar came quick-smart once despatched. I eagerly opened the box, tuned it then plugged it in and... was underwhelmed! The build quality is great, unbelievable for the price in fact, but the string gauge choice was wrong. No doubt it was the heaviest gauge in the factory from the bulk packs of strings but this model needs some thick strings. The supplied set felt sloppy to play, and would go out of tune if strummed with the barest of heavy picking. Fast-foward 24 hours: I received a set of D'Addario 68-14s from Amazon and my baritone world has changed! Full-bodied low notes, clear highs. Ah, so good! Frets are dressed nicely. The fingerboard was a bit dry but coconut oil fixed that. Tuning pegs are firm but not hard. Intonation was great (but might need a tweak after the new gauge). Pick ups are great for the price. Bridge was easy to lower for the thicker gauge. Totally happy and very glad I invested all those months ago. Well done, Artist. You've made a killer baritone guitar :)
