Artist MODRIC Sonic Blue Headless Guitar w/ Hand Made Pickups

Following on from the success of our awesome range of headless guitars and basses, the Artist MODRIC is a slightly higher-end offering, with a host of unreal features making this one of our most playable and ergonomic designs yet. Featuring a quarter-sawn Canadian Maple neck, stainless steel frets, a bone nut, wheeled string tree, and auto-lock strap buttons, the MODRIC has been designed with the player in mind - every little detail combines to ensure playability and tuning stability is as close to perfect as possible!

Having tested untold amounts of pickup options, we settled on a set of high-end, hand-made pickups wound by the Laohao workshop, a small team producing low-quantity batches of custom pickups to a frankly unbelievable standard. Push-pull pots allow for coil-splitting in every position, so you can get some high-output shredding done, or some spanky, slinky riffing when in single coil mode, while-pasted copper shielding ensures minimal noise no matter your settings! For a riffstick that sounds and feels as good as it looks, give the MODRIC a try!

I really love my new Modric headless guitar

By: on 2 May 2025
After playing fingerstyle on wide neck, nylon string, classical guitars all my life, I’ve been on a journey towards progressive fusion and electric guitars. I’d landed on a Gibson 335 copy which sounded good and played well, but I just didn’t bond with it because it’s so big and heavy. I decided to try the opposite extreme and go small and minimal, hence the Modric.

What a revellation! No more aching back and clunking the headstock on mic stands. By coincidence the Modric arrived when I was laid up with an injured knee and I was able to play it while reclining on a settee with one leg up. The cut-out at the bottom fits nicely on my thigh and the guitar is so short there’s nothing to get in the way. It’s also perfect for playing in our campervan, where there isn’t much room for a bigger guitar.

The fingerboard is perfect with a nice radius, and I like the slightly larger frets than I’ve had before. Despite its amazing price there’s nothing cheap about this guitar. The frets have nicely chamfered ends and there’s nothing sharp or scratchy. The setup was great right out of the box and I tuned up and started playing. I might lower the action a little more, but there’s nothing wrong with it as it comes.
The hand wound pick-ups have a really clean, clear tone and there’s a nice range of sounds available from the coil splitting pots. Because I use a looper in performance I need a very quiet guitar with no ground noise or buzz and the Modric is clean up to high gain. The copper shielded cavity must be doing a good job. The hardware seems solid and functional and the tuners work well. Somehow, tuning a guitar by stretching the strings straight out seems to make more sense than wrapping them around a post. Anyway, the tuners are easy to use, once you get used to how close together they are, and the guitar holds its tune well.

It might be surprising to some that In over 50 years I’ve only ever played with my fingernails, but somehow this guitar inspired me to learn something new and I’ve started using a pick to get those fast progressive runs. (Don’t call it “shredding”!)
Any new guitar should bring inspiration and propel the player in new directions. The Modric has done this for me. Thanks, Artist Guitars.

A Quick Revisit

By: on 22 February 2025
Just a quick revisit back here. After having the guitar a few months now I have to say this thing plays and sounds brilliant. If Artist made these exact specs in another colour or open pore etc…. I would buy it for sure. I am almost tempted to buy another one as a spare.

Brilliant guitar for the price!

Straight up, this guitar is amazing considering the price. Like omg. I've been playing for 20 years. I now generally use fairly high end guitars aimed towards prog/metal, fitted out with very good pickups, not naming any other brands here but you'd know them.... And this guitar honestly stands up. It plays super easy, needed a slight tune out of the box but otherwise set up very well. I might try and lower the action a bit on mine but that's just personal preference. The point is, it plays amazing straight out of the box. So props to Artist for that too. The neck is very fast, nice and flat contour, and though it isn't the thinnest neck it doesn't feel cumbersome at all. I guess due to the headless nature of the guitar. It is very comfortable to use and yeah just plays super easy. There are a few tiny things. The coil tap isn't as significant as with some other higher end pickups, but still decent. I do like that the coil tap is split between the two pots though, gives some more tonal variety. The neck pickup is quite fat sounding. But still pretty clear. That may be down to personal preference though. But the bridge pickup sounds sweet full and split so that's a plus. Other than that there's not really much else I could pick on. And again, for the price. I can't really complain at all. So this gets 5 stars for that reason. I can't give it any less.

More than happy!

I actually prefer a heavier weight in guitars. Needless to say this thing feels great to play. I had to lower the action slightly but that’s a taste thing. It’s ergonomically very comfortable to play. The humbuckers have a fairly nice character and I am quite fussy. I have purchased around 7 Artist guitars and I have always changed the bridge humbucker. The originals sound fine. With this guitar I am leaving them. It’s a shame Artist Guitars don’t make a good gig bag to fit their headless guitar range. Anyway, I would buy this guitar again if I had to. It’s solid for that price!

MODRIC Sonic Blue is a beaut

By: on 20 April 2024
Bought this on pre-order back in February and took the delivery at the end of March -- right on schedule. It's my very first purchase from Artist Guitars and I'm surprised by the quality and the value it brought. First of all, the guitar is beautifully finished in this "sonic blue" or light cyan colour. Even the neck is painted over -- something that I thought might affect the playability but turned out not be the case at all. It's also my first headless guitar which I really appreciate the weight (or the lack of). Picking it up makes the boomer me feeling 20 years younger already. It comes with a list of high end features such as stainless fret, bone nuts, coil splitting for each individual humbuckers, etc. The guitar came ready to play however as I switched over to a lighter gauge of strings, just some minor set up is needed, which is super easy to do. Guitar also came with most tools (3 sets of allen keys), however a small phillips head screwdriver is needed to adjust individual bridge pieces. It's easy to play with great sustain, and stays in tune as well. Did I mention how light and gigable this guitar is? As of the set of "Laohao" humbuckers -- they aren't overly hot but with coil splitting they can be very versatile. For nitpicking sake, Artist Guitars might consider adding luminous inlays. I think the locking nuts are also the weak spots. However I would be kidding myself comparing it to a strandberg that's 4 or 5 times the price. For how much I've spent on this, I don't think there's a better valued headless guitar out there. Thanks Artist Guitars!

Modric Headless

What a great headless guitar! Out of the box a very high standard - setup was great, weight is super light, great upper fret access, pickups are really good too, coil split works great, very quiet (shielded), fret finish is better than some of my high-end guitars! looking forward to gigging it.
