Artist AT73 Pink Paisley Burst Electric Guitar w/ Hand Made Pickups

The latest in our much-lauded range of TC-style guitars, the Artist AT73 is a sleek and modern take on the classic paisley designs of old, packed with a host of great features to bring you an instrument that straddles the line between innately familiar and excitingly new. With a matching headstock, and a classic-looking roasted maple neck finished with a comfortable satin feel, the high-grade locking tuners and rosewood fretboard (at a lightning-quick 14-inch radius), make for a guitar that is smooth and easy to play.

Having tested untold amounts of pickup options, we settled on a set of high-end, hand-made single coils wound by the Laohao workshop, a small team producing low-quantity batches of custom pickups to a frankly unbelievable standard. Paired with 250k pots, the AT73 packs a massive punch, every bit as twangy and biting as you could expect from a TC-style guitar. Every detail has been pored over with this one - a bone nut, copper shielding, a wheeled string tree, locking strap buttons, and glow-in-the-dark side fret markers are among a host of modern features that will make this your new number one.

There may be slight variations between the paisley finishes on each AS72. This is due to the paisley finish being applied by hand.

Plays and sounds great, the quarter sawn neck looks awesome with tight close grain nice rosewood board and shiny stainless frets. Professional ergonomics; a neck heel with comfort contours makes this thing rather comfy and easy to get up to those higher frets. Normally i swap pickups out but these do a great job im happy to leave them in as the guitar really sounds great how it is.

4.5 Stars for this AT73

I did a previous review of this model (which didn’t wow me), but I had that one replaced and this is a big improvement over the one I returned. The pups sound much better (more twang, responsiveness and punch), QC is noticeably improved overall and the neck was not bad out of the box, but I’ve spent time setting it up and it wasn’t too far out with relief, string heights and intonation. There does seem to be QC inconsistencies with these guitars but I’m happy with this one and would recommend it especially if Artist can maintain or continue to improve consistency and quality. The key features I’d been looking for were stainless steel frets and locking tuners, both of which this guitar has. The neck feels good without any rough or sharp fret edges and satin neck finish is also a bonus. As usual, Artist customer service is excellent and reliable. Nick picked out this replacement and he did an excellent job with that. I’d be much more confident on one of the relic models knowing someone is checking them before sending them out because I hate returning gear. I’m glad Artist have introduced higher spec’d teles as there was a bit of a gap in the market for tele lovers like me.

Amazing Modern T-Style

By: on 25 May 2024
Unlike some other reviews the guitar I received was very well set up out of the box. Fretwork and nut was excellent (the nut is often the dodgy element of import guitars imo) and the action low and fast. I actually raised it a bit. For this money getting SS frets, roasted maple neck, locking tuners, and modern contoured mahogany body (the heel contour RULES) is nuts. Very cool instrument and great to see Artist pushing their upper end models.

Spec-wise, this is my dream tele. I’ve literally waited years to find one with all these features and I bought the black version as well (which I returned). First the bad news. Unfortunately, the QC is not good. The paint finishing is amateurish and arrived with a serious chip on the front with the top layer delaminating. The string ferrules on the back are laughably all over the place (not in a straight line nor evenly spaced). Looks like they were drilled freehand in some backyard garage. Does this factory not even have a drill press set-up? The pick-ups sound much more like decent strat pups, but lack the twang, punch or clarity of good tele pups (despite the description) that I’ve had. I’ll probably replace them with a spare tele set I have. They are very quiet though, probably due to being well shielded. The specs are good; the locking tuners, pots and switch all seem fine so far. The neck generally plays quite well but I’ll do some more adjustments as the action is too high (the black version of this tele I received was unplayable out of the box, but I’ll elaborate in a separate review). It’s a nice looking guitar…if you don’t look too close. I’ve been an Artist customer for years but this was the first electric guitar I’ve bought from them. I previously bought an Artist nylon acoustic for my partner which was excellent for the price (and it’s still going well after 7+ years). I’m pretty underwhelmed by this Artist signature tele though. I wasn’t expecting Fender custom shop level or anything like it, but it wasn’t quite up to scratch. The QC checks and balances need improving a lot before I’d consider another Artist electric guitar. I do appreciate Artist’s customer service and guarantees though, which I’ve unfortunately had to rely upon with both teles.

Pink paisley t style

As soon as this instrument was listed I was interested. Who doesn’t want a paisley finished Tele shaped object? Unfortunately the reveal was less than stellar, truss rod so tight the neck had a backwards bow and action worryingly high. The finish is as always absolute class, I was not sold on the dark fingerboard having a preference for maple, and the vintage style bridge may appeal to some but I’m hoping a Wilkinson modern will fit. Pickups are pretty powerful and controls are as good as you would want. The neck profile, to me at least, is not as instantly comfortable as the tc59 family, of which I have several, not BAD just different. I do hope that a spare artist neck I have will fit without too much hassle and I may also chamfer the edge of the pick guard as it presently looks a little clunky. Strap locks appear to be good and are certainly an easy fit to a normal strap. This sums up a mostly personal opinion of yet another almost perfect guitar from the fine Artist brand
