Designed for 4- or 5-string banjos and mandolin, the NS Banjo/Mandolin Capo Pro assures buzz-free, in-tune performance at any fret. A micrometer adjustment mechanism allows you to dial in the exact tension needed for clear ringing notes without excessive force in any position on the neck. This greatly reduces the need to retune your instrument during and after capo use. Excellent capo

3 February 2015
I bought this one for use on my Fender Mando-Strat mandolin (4-string), although I've also tried it on my Artist Guitars 8-stringer. The first thing that strikes you about this unit when you open the package is the size - this thing is small! (Significantly smaller than the mando capo I already own.) That, of course, is a good thing - mando necks are pretty thin anyway, so a capo that stays out of the way of your hand rates well with me. So, why did I buy this when I already had a mandolin capo? Simply because of the micrometer adjustment design. In my experience, instruments like the mandolin are more prone to intonation problems with a capo, simply because of the shorter scale and lighter-gauge strings combined with a fixed (and often quite strong) capo spring tension. (Perhaps that's why relatively few mando players use a capo?) The advantage of this Planet Waves unit is that you can wind in just the required amount of tension with the micrometer dial, which helps help to minimise the intonation issue. The DISadvantage of such a design, of course, is that you can't just set the capo up and forget it - the micrometer needs to be set every time you apply the capo, then unscrewed again to take it off. Still, in practice, application is relatively fast anyway, and you get used to quicky winding in just the right amount of pressure on the strings ..... Overall, an excellent unit - just don't lose it in your pocket, because it really is that tiny!
