Wish I returned it

Regretting this purchase. Previously bought an Artist tube amp and was impressed so thought I'd give their guitars ago. This guitar was not what I expected given the other positive reviews. Firstly, there was a really small cosmetic chip on the fret board but no big deal. At this price, minor issues are expected. Next I could only raise the bridge pickup height on one side. The screw on the other side did nothing. Still not a deal breaker though. Then while setting it up, I noticed the nut is cut quite high. Ok that's a bit more work but still doable. But then I found the slot for the g string is cut too wide. So when I bend it the string visibly moves side to side in the slot and clicks. So that's either a nut repair or replacement. Far more work than I had in mind for this guitar. I would be returning it if I wasn't out of the return window. Unfortunately I was slow to get it out of the box and try it.

I am in love with this guitar. I have the red & black one also but this is just a step above. I love the pickups & when i pulled the pick guard up i noticed some quality pots & selector switch in there. I think this is my new favourite. Thanks Artists.

Sea foamy goodness

This is my 12th instrument from Artist and once again I've been very impressed. However, for a beginner player with no lutherie skills I think it would have been a big disappointment and possibly a return prospect. Hank on QC may have had a bad day but out of the box it was a fairly harsh set up and I ended up doing the following. New nut with wider string spacing, (nice wide fretboard and sensible fret bevel made this possible). String slots cut to a more playable depth. (Crazy high, making strings go out of tune in first position like a $20 uke) Polished the frets. (Could still see and feel marks from fret levelling) Turned the truss rod a quarter turn. Put a 0.6mm shim in the neck, Slight adjustments to saddle height. New 10 to 48 strings. (Came with 9's) And finally took off the scratch plate and cut the pickup springs in half so they could be adjusted high enough. The bridge pickup is not underpowered as some reviewers suggested but the neck angle and big springs meant that even when cranked as high as possible that the bridge polepiece was almost 5mm from the string rather than the recommended 2ish. Now balanced output across all pickup selections. Despite all this I'm still giving it a 5-star rating because a bad setup doesn't make a bad guitar and the actual guitar is simply and astonishingly awesome! Maybe give Hank a week off, he's working too hard!

Probably the best Strat at this price!

Fantastic ergonomics the neck heel and upper fret access is great as well as the fit and finish, this feels like a much more expensive instrument definitely worth it.

Crazy good value

By: on 11 May 2023
Love the look and how the sea foam green sits against the roasted maple neck and the cream plastics. The neck is thicker than a Fender strat neck. It feels similar to my TC59 in regards to chunkiness. Heavy for a strat but not LP heavy. Fretwork is good. Not scratchy on bends. Action slightly high for me but easily fixed with a few twists of the truss rod Hard to see in the pic but the 3 ply pickguard has black as the middle colour. It really sets off well against the black writing on the cream knobs. Gives the guitar a vintage feel Pots and switches feel tighter than my TC59. Trem feels nice. Fair to say that for AUD$349 delivered, this is incredible value.

Just a great SSS guitar

By: on 30 April 2023
This is my second Artist Guitar and for sure both guitars are just simply amazing. This STMVG Seafoam SSS is absolutely amazing to play. It feels so nice in your hands, super good out of the box, I just changed the action a little (Lower), strings to 9-42 and polished the frets. The Wilkinson Trem is really good, I prefer it to my F USA Pro Trem to be honest. If you're on a budget and want a strat, you can't go wrong with this guitar. The pickups are also very nice and the tones are very cool, I mainly play neck or neck-middle, both positions provide great tones. I didn't notice a drop in output on the bridge pickup either. Overall, a really awesome guitar. Oh, I've gotta say the roasted neck on this beauty is the dux gutz, just gorgeous. Well done again to the team at Artist Guitars.

Plays very nicely but the bridge pickup relatively

By: on 14 December 2022
Echoing one of the other reviews for this guitar, it plays beautifully with a very nice neck feel. The colour of the body and the roasted maple neck look as good as, or better than the pictures when seen in real life. The neck and middle pickups sound rich and I'd be fairly comfortable leaving them stock except for the bridge pickup. It's so quiet. Quiet to the point of me thinking the guitar was defective and me sending it back. Turns out it's by design, so I'll likely swap them out for something more consistent across all five positions. Not the guitar itself, but the customer service were quick to reply and generally helpful.

Beautiful, well finished S-Type Guitar

By: on 4 December 2022
I'm not usually a S-type guitar guy - I'm a simple man who find's anything more than a Tele's Vol & Tone pots confusing. But the combination of a beautiful colour and minimal control set grabbed my attention. In person the guitar is stunning with a perfect finish. I'd agree the bridge pickup is weak and overshadowed by it's two colleagues but the fundamentals of the guitar - body, neck, pots, frets are all are rock solid. The body is resonant and light, the neck is wide but comfortable. It was absolutely playable right out of the box. I've really been surprised by the trem, which once settled in, keeps the guitar fairly in tune even after some solid whammy abuse. I bought this with the intention of upgrading the pickups to turn this into my grunge / 90's American alt guitar. I popped it into my local guitar store to have them installed and have a set up done. When I picked it up they commented on the quality of guitar and said they'd had to do absolutely nothing to the neck - the frets were already perfectly finished. To be honest the pickups that come with the guitar sound quite decent, it's just there is a difference in volume between them that can't be compensated for by changing their respective heights. If you don't plan on using the bridge - this is good to go. For $349 this guitar is an absolute steal, a great platform for modding and a keeper.

Decent budget strat style guitar

By: on 26 June 2022
First off this guitar looks awesome. No finish problems to be seen. The roasted maple neck is really nice. Feels good in the hand and no sharp frets. I checked for high frets with a fret rocker and all is well. After a tuneup Intonation was spot on Which surprised me pleasantly. I will also polish the frets to my standards when I change the strings though they are not terrible. The pickups sound as they should for this style of guitar and easy to change as taste directs. A criticism is the plastic knobs wobble when turning so we’re put on crooked. A couple of the screws in the back plate were stripped out and cannot be tightened. The selector switch felt ok and worked well. The tone pot is all or nothing which is common in this price range and is an easy swap out but really, for a couple of dollars more good quality audio taper pots should be standard. A great guitar for those starting out and for us seasoned musos looking for a base to mod and use as a work horse without worrying about damaging it or theft. Good job Artist.

Not as good as the others.

By: on 23 June 2022
I've bought 5 Artist guitars now and have been really happy with the quality and price. I already have an American strat but I liked the look of this one so grabbed it. Unfortunately it is going back to the shop for refund. The bridge pickup it very quiet, and even fully out with the others in, doesnt have enough output. I also ony bought it for the look, and the colour of the neck is dark, unlike the one in the pictures. To my eyes, this is ugly. That being said, I would still recomend Artist guitars as all my others are awesome and the company has sent me the return postage.

Sensational Seafoam Green guitar

By: on 21 June 2022
The quality of this guitar is outstandingly good. If a beginner bought or received one of these, they would be stoked. Completely playable straight out of the box. For me, it only needed minor adjustments to action and pickup height as personal preference. And a couple other tweaks because I tune my 6-strings down a half step. The volume knob being away from the bridge pickup makes palm muting much easier than other ST styles with 3 knobs. The tremolo is a very very tight fit, but I applied a tiny amount of silicon spray lube (from my car care box) which helped. Excellent value for money, and sounds great though my amps. This is the sixth Artist Guitar I've purchased now.

Artist seafoam green s type

By: on 13 June 2022
After a little wait I now have my beautiful seafoam green s type. The neck is excellent, tremolo system ,not quite the same easy going unit as on the modern or 62, arm took a fair nudge to house, but works really well. I did find bridge pickup a little lacking in output, especially compared to neck, but a new set of slightly ' better?' pickups installed now has it performing as good as it looks. Once again thankyou Artist guitars, products that deliver far more than price might indicate

I am an Artist Guitar Convert, Never did I think a sub $300 guitar could be this good! This absolutely blows away any Squier (Classic Vibes, Vintage Modified etc) and would give MiM Fenders a run for their money! Great design, Great materials, Great execution, Great setup. I will say it over and over, It is a great guitar. Thank you Artist Guitars, This is the S guitar I have always dreamt about.

Great gear

By: on 16 August 2021
I can’t believe that in 1979, I worked all summer to save money for a genuine US Fender Stratocaster. 42 years later, Artist guitars come along with an instrument vastly cheaper but superior in quality to the original thing. This guitar has locking tuners – and they work. The Wilkinson vibrato stays in tune. This guitar has so much sustain. The low E string is audible for 25 seconds after picking it. The potentiometers are high quality alpha pots made in Korea and overall, the paint job is immaculate. Everything is nicely routed, the pickups sound great and the frets have been professionally levelled and polished. All up, this is a great guitar. Minor thing, the nut is 43mm. Artist claims 42mm. No big deal. The website also doesn’t talk about the tuners being locking tuners. This is a bonus.
